The production of retread tyres used to be very big business in New Zealand until the importation of Secondhand tyres and cheap Chinese product changed everything. Production of truck and aircraft tyre retreads, which obviously are of a high standard, continues; but car retreads have virtually disappeared from the market.
The car retread and remould tyres we used to sell in this country tended to be poor quality, hard to balance, short lived and subject to all sorts of product failures and quality control problems. Basically, even secondhand tyres tended to leave the factory as a quality product whereas retreads were poor quality from day one. Even the cheapest Chinese tyres are now a better buy than retreads. Just as with Secondhand tyres, the per kilometer cost of retreads will tend to be higher than for new, cheap, Chinese tyres.
As the quality of new Chinese tyres rose while their prices declined, the retread industry collapsed; which is a good thing, as they were not good enough for modern cars.
Bettertyres does not recommend that Retread tyres are fitted to your vehicle.
