As winter approaches, Bettertyres recommends drivers start planning for the joys of winter weather motoring. All you need to do is think back to previous winters and recall the rain, flooded road surfaces and super slippery tarmacs to remind you what your tyres have to cope with in winter.
To safely cope with winter road challenges, your tyres need to have a tread depth of 3 ml or more. Ok, the legal minimum is 1.5 mm but that is not enough for flooded road surfaces etc being driven over at high speeds. Also, it is important that the tyres are properly inflated and preferably less than 6 years old.
And it is best to run a silica compound compound tyre like those pioneered by Hankook which offer enhanced wet road grip or if your budget is tight, one of the best of class Chinese bargain priced tyres like the Green Max, Crosswind or Winda.
Drivers of 4wd vehicles which are driven through mud and soft soil have an additional reason to pay attention to their thread depths, as even the best mud tyres will fail to perform without adequate tread. Bettertyres recommends that such vehicles have at least 4 mm of tread.
So please make this your winter tyre safety month and check out your tyres before it is too late!
