The School and Christmas holiday season has almost arrived with many Kiwi’s about to incur the misery of holiday travel disruptions caused by poor and often non existent tyre maintenance. Driving a heavily leaden car over long distances in hot weather places substantial stress on your tyres and tyre failure can occur when they are also seriously or severely under inflated.
Why is this such a big problem? Well, with under inflated tyres, the entire weight of the vehicle is concentrated on the outer edges causing overheating and dramatically raising the prospects of a blowout at high motorway and highway speeds. Also, under inflation dramatically shortens tyre life.
The solution is so simple, regularly check your tyre pressures with an accurate tyre gauge when they are cold and inflate the tyres to their correct pressure. Obviously this is especially important prior to long trips. The alternative is to drive on under inflated tyres and expose your family and yourself to substantial travel delays caused by tyre failure or even loosing the use of your vehicle if it is involved in an accident
At the Campaign for Better Tyres we reckon it’s a no brainer, check your tyres air pressures and avoid holiday tyre misery!
