Winter and it’s heavy rain are almost here and it is time to replace your worn out tyres. Obviously all tyres with a tread depth of 1.5 mm and lower need to be urgently replaced, but serious consideration should also be given to replacing all tyres measuring under 3 mm of tread. The 1.5 WOF tread depth is the absolute minimum requirement but does not guarantee effective road holding in heavy rain; wet weather performance of tyres declines dramatically as the tread reduces below 3 mm.
Tyre safety was closely monitored under the old 6 month WOF check system with tyre problems usually being picked up before they became too serious. But with the new 12 monthly WOF check, tyres go unchecked for 12 months and can deteriorate dangerously in that time.
The Campaign for Better Tyres urges all motorists to check their tyres for low tread, flat spots, cuts and bulges etc before the sometimes hazardous winter driving season commences.
